Subject-by-Subject Description

Here’s a overview of what you can expect from our Irish Homeschooling Curriculum:

Religion: This year, we continue using the Our Holy Faith textbook series. This classic text contains beautiful artwork, revision questions and activities for your child. This year, we cover the history of the world—from Creation to Pope Francis. This is a solid Bible and Church history book and will ensure you child has a wonderful relationship with God before receiving his Confirmation this year.

We’ll also have your child read The Soldier of Christ—a classic Confirmation prep textbook. This book teaches your child the importance and significance of Confirmation, and ensures that he is well-disposed to receive this important sacrament. (We have also incorporated special exercises with a Confirmation-focus in other subjects as well.)

Gaeilge: The study and love of our native language is another particularly important subject. We encourage children to really love Irish by selecting a relevant and engaging textbook, Caint is Comhrá. We provide complete answers to the exercises in the Main Textbook and in the Portfolio—all in our custom-made Answer Key, written by a Gaelscoil teacher. Caint is Comhrá also offers a range of online resources to help non-natives (or mothers who haven’t studied Irish in a while!) teach Irish to their children. The pronunciations given online are excellent to help your child learn to speak and understand Irish well!

Next, we work on your child’s reading and vocabulary with the delightful and vintage Soilse series. Finally, we continue our study of Irish Grammar, which we began in Third Class.

(We also provide resources for parents to utilise Gaelscoil mathematics texts at this level, to really encourage full immersion in our beloved language, if desired. We feel that it is important to use Irish as much as possible, to help our students become fluent.)

English: In Sixth Class, we focus on how to take what we have read and learn to transmit these ideas to others—by writing. This is a crucial step in the development of our children—as they learn to think and reason well and to convey their thoughts to others.

To accomplish this task, we will still work on the more mundane tasks of English Grammar and Spellings. We will also continue our use of a formal writing workbook, wherein we explore and practise a range of writing styles.

Mathematics: We continue learning Mathematics with two typical school workbooks. We have included teaching tips for parents and also a full Answer Key for all exercises assigned.

Latin: We complete our studies this year by a beginning look at one of the most influential languages in Western Civilisation–Latin. This exercise is not only beneficial (as it helps students perfect their grammar and vocabulary), but it is also a great way to teach your children more about ancient cultures and our Church History.
