This is an exciting and engaging way to study as a group!, and we are sure that your whole family will enjoy learning about these troubled—but important—times, together.

This year, we will study the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Age of Discovery, the aftermath of these things, and finally both the American and French Revolutions, and their lasting impact on Western Civilisation: the Early Modern Period.

Last year, we looked at Christendom: the universal culture focused on Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. This year, we focus on what has been called The Rending of Christendom: The Protestant Reformation and its aftermath, as well as the American and French Revolutions.

Subjects covered in this course: History, Geography & Timeline, Family-style Read-alouds, Poetry, Chemistry and the Fine Arts (with a focus on Renaissance Art and Irish Art of the same time period).

During this period of education, we are very much focused on producing children who love reading, who are excellent readers themselves and who are becoming proficient at handwriting, spelling and grammar. We work on our reading skills by reading the engaging living books that we have assigned, and we work on our spelling and grammar skills through our practise of handwriting and by seeing many words spelled and used correctly as we read. This method of education combines and interweaves as many subjects as possible to ensure the child is engaged and truly learning, all without time-consuming and mindless workbooks!

Our Irish homeschool year is divided into four separate and distinct Terms, during which we will focus on a particular aspect of Early Modern History. Throughout the year, we will utilise a number of living books to fully immerse ourselves in the particular time periods. We also use a craft book to make history come alive for our students and we will enjoy learning some basic Chemistry.
