This homeschool curriculum for Christendom is appropriate for all of your students in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Classes [alongside their class-specific curriculum(s) for such things as reading, handwriting, maths, etc. (sold separately)].

This is an exciting and engaging way to study as a group!, and we are sure that your whole family will enjoy learning about the history of Christendom and Ireland’s place therein, together.

. . . But what is Christendom? Christendom is commonly defined as a universal culture focused on Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. Christendom is the collection of lands wherein Christianity is the dominant religion. This period lasted from approximately the Fourth Century, up until the governments of Western Europe began to shake off the rule of the Church. Christendom was Europe, and Europe was Christendom—before the Reformation.

So, this year, we will study Christendom as a whole—and Ireland’s place therein. We’ll study the Coming of Christ and the Early Church, the fall of Rome, the spread of the Christian Faith to the world and St. Patrick’s Mission to the Irish, the Viking Raids and the Norman Invasion and the Crusades, and, finally, the closing of the Middle Ages, leading into the Renaissance and the Reformation.

Subjects covered in this course: History, Geography & Timeline, Family-style Read-alouds, Poetry, Biology and Irish Nature Study and the Fine Arts (Gregorian Chant and Irish Art).

During this period of education, we are very much focused on producing children who love reading, who are excellent readers themselves and who are becoming proficient at handwriting, spelling and grammar. We work on our reading skills by reading the engaging living books that we have assigned, and we work on our spelling and grammar skills through our practise of handwriting and by seeing many words spelled and used correctly as we read. This method of education combines and interweaves as many subjects as possible to ensure the child is engaged and truly learning, all without time-consuming and mindless workbooks!

Our school year is divided into four separate and distinct Terms, during which we will focus on a particular aspect of Christendom. Throughout the year, we will utilise a number of living books to fully immerse ourselves in the particular time periods. We also use a craft book to make history come alive for our students and we will enjoy learning some basic Biology and Nature Study.
