Description

Sister Mary Wilhelmina Lancaster, OSB, founded the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of Apostles, in 1995 at the age of seventy, after over fifty years of religious life. Her journey was marked by an unwavering devotion to God’s will, a commitment to the traditional monastic life, and a deep love for the Latin Mass. The community she founded was dedicated to preserving the sacred beauty of Catholic tradition through the Latin liturgy, Gregorian chant, and contemplative prayer.

In May 2023, four years after Sister Mary Wilhelmina’s passing, the sisters were preparing to reinter her remains after completing a St. Joseph Shrine. During this process, they made an astonishing discovery—her body appeared to be incorrupt, a miraculous sign of her holiness and fidelity to God. This miraculous event has deepened the admiration and reverence many have for her, and it stands as a powerful testament to her sanctity and spiritual commitment.

Born in 1938 in the United States, Sister Mary Wilhelmina experienced the struggles and challenges of being a Black Catholic during a time of racial tensions, yet she remained steadfast in her faith. She spent decades in religious life, cultivating a deep spirituality and sense of devotion. The Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of Apostles, was born out of her desire to stay true to the traditional Catholic faith, and it quickly became a thriving community that attracted vocations and devotion.

Her original poetry, humble lifestyle, and leadership left a lasting impact on the community, which continues to grow. The order’s emphasis on sacred art, music, and architecture reflects her vision of the beauty of the faith. Sister Mary Wilhelmina’s life, filled with love, prayer, and service, is an inspiring example of fidelity to God’s will, and her legacy continues to influence and inspire many, especially after her incorruptible remains were discovered. Her story is one of faith, devotion, and surrender to God’s divine plan.
