About St. Augustine of Hippo
St. Augustine of Hippo (354–430) is one of the greatest Fathers of the Church and a Doctor of the Church, renowned for his profound influence on Christian theology and Western thought. Born in North Africa, he pursued worldly ambitions in rhetoric and philosophy before undergoing a dramatic conversion through the prayers of his mother, St. Monica, and the preaching of St. Ambrose. Baptized in 387, St. Augustine later became bishop of Hippo, where he guided his flock amid heresies and political upheaval.
A brilliant thinker and writer, St. Augustine produced enduring works such as Confessions, a spiritual autobiography recounting his restless search for God, and The City of God, which offered a vision of history grounded in divine providence. His insights on grace, sin, and salvation shaped Christian doctrine for centuries. Remembered as a passionate seeker of truth, St. Augustine’s life and writings continue to inspire hearts toward God with the words: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
