The Douay-Rheims Bible is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate, produced by English Catholic scholars in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It was created in response to the Protestant Reformation and the growing number of English-language Bibles, such as the Geneva Bible and the King James Version. The translation was undertaken by exiled English Catholics in the English College at Douay (Douai), France, under the leadership of Cardinal William Allen and Gregory Martin, its principal translator.

The New Testament was published in Rheims in 1582, while the Old Testament followed in two volumes, published in Douay in 1609–1610. The Douay-Rheims translation was largely translated from St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate Bible, which was a translation into Latin by Saint Jerome in the late 4th Century. Commissioned by Pope Damasus I, the Latin Vulgate became the official Bible of the Catholic Church for over a thousand years.
