Description
The Seven Deadly Sins are a group of immoral behaviors or thoughts that are considered to be the root of other sinful actions in Catholic teaching. They are categorized as “deadly” because they can lead to spiritual death and separation from God if left unaddressed. The sins include:
- Pride: Excessive self-importance and the desire for power or admiration.
- Greed: An insatiable desire for material wealth or possessions.
- Lust: Intense desire for sexual pleasure or objectification of others.
- Envy: Jealousy over another’s good fortune.
- Gluttony: Overindulgence in food or drink.
- Wrath: Intense anger or desire for revenge.
- Sloth: Laziness or a lack of desire to act, particularly in spiritual matters.
And they exist within all of us as a result of original sin. These deadly sins are seen as particularly harmful because they can distort a person’s relationship with God, others, and themselves. Overcoming them is central to a Catholic moral life and spiritual growth.
