Description

Covering the life of the famous martyr of the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz, this beautifully written biography shows how Saint Maximilian Kolbe (+1941) worked mightily to conquer the world for Christ through Mary Immaculate.

His desire to win the salvation of souls, even to the point of offering his own life in the place of another, encourages the reader to evangelize with zeal like this heroic saint of modern times.

St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar, priest, and martyr known for his selfless sacrifice during World War II. Born in 1894 in Poland, Father Kolbe dedicated his life to spreading devotion to the Virgin Mary, founding the Militia Immaculatae (Army of the Immaculate) and a successful Catholic publication. His missionary work took him as far away as Japan before returning to his native Poland.

During the Nazi occupation, Father Kolbe was arrested for sheltering Jewish refugees and anti-Nazi activities. In 1941, he was sent to Auschwitz, where he continued his priestly ministry, offering hope and prayers to fellow prisoners. When a fellow inmate was chosen for execution, Father Kolbe volunteered to take his place, demonstrating ultimate Christian love and sacrifice–laying down his life for a friend. He was starved for two weeks before being killed by lethal injection on the 14th of August, 1941.

Father Maximilian Kolbe was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1982, recognized as a martyr of charity. His story remains a powerful testament to faith, courage, and selflessness. Today, he is the patron saint of prisoners, journalists, and the pro-life movement. His example inspires millions to live lives of compassion and unwavering faith, even in the face of great suffering.

St. Maximilian Kolbe’s entire life and mission were deeply centered on his devotion to the Virgin Mary, whom he called the Immaculata (the Immaculate One). He believed that total consecration to Mary was the surest way to holiness and union with Christ. Kolbe saw Mary not only as a model of purity but as an active spiritual mother who leads us to God. He tirelessly promoted Marian consecration, encouraging people to entrust themselves completely to her, believing she would guide them to Jesus. He often said, “Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.”
