Description
The Douay-Rheims Bible, translated between 1582 and 1610 and later revised by Bishop Richard Challoner in the 18th century, is presented as one of the most accurate and enduring English translations of Scripture. For over two centuries, it served as the primary Catholic Bible in English and remains highly valued for its faithful rendering of the text and its reverent language. Its correct translation deepens our understanding of God’s Word, while helpful annotations, references and indexes support study and devotion.
This translation was produced by English Catholic scholars living in exile at the English College in Douay, France, during the Protestant Reformation. Led by Cardinal William Allen and principally translated by Gregory Martin, the work responded to the rise of Protestant Bibles. The New Testament was published in Rheims in 1582, followed by the Old Testament in Douay in 1609–1610.
The Douay-Rheims is largely based on St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate, a 4th-century translation commissioned by Pope Damasus I that served as the Catholic Church’s official Bible for over a millennium. Its extensive annotations were designed not only to explain the text but also to defend Catholic teachings and address Protestant interpretations.
This edition is a sewn hardbound reprint based on the 1899 text, originally published in 1914. Bound in imitation leather with strong end sheets and printed on compact Bible paper, it is designed for regular use while remaining affordable. It features an attractive cover with gold detailing.
