The History of the Penny Catechism:
The Penny Catechism, formally known as Catechism of Christian Doctrine, emerged in the 19th century as an accessible, pocket-sized Catholic teaching tool—so named because it originally sold for a penny! It gained prominence across Great Britain and Ireland, serving as a staple catechetical guide in both regions throughout the early and mid-20th cenntury.
Structured in a question-and-answer format, this compact pamphlet covered the core aspects of the Catholic faith: the Creed, Commandments, Sacraments, virtues, prayers, and daily life. For Junior Infants and up.
In Ireland, a green-covered edition of the same text—sometimes dubbed “McQuaid’s catechism”—became widely used after its release in 1951. It was officially approved by the bishops of Ireland (green-covered edition is available here: Irish Green Catechism).
